Top Tips
-
REPORT IT
The accident should always be reported to a foreman, site agent, supervisor or manager. This is no matter how trivial it seems at the time. -
ACCIDENT BOOK (REPORT)
Always write the accident report yourself if you are fit enough to do so. If you are not, you should never sign a report form without reading it. -
SLIP OR TRIP
If the accident involves a slip or trip it is important that you state what you tripped or slipped on in the Accident Book. -
FAULTY EQUIPMENT
If you have been injured as a result of faulty equipment make sure full details are recorded in the accident book. -
HEAVY LOADS
As is often the case accidents occur because someone has lifted a heavy weight. It is important that if you can, you get the item you lifted weighed or alternatively at least get one of your colleagues to look at it and estimate the weight. -
WITNESS EVIDENCE
It is crucially important that names and addresses of witnesses are collected at the time of the accident. -
PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE
Arrange for photographs to be taken if possible. -
MEDICAL HELP
Always attend your GP no matter how minor you think your injury is and always give details of your accident to your GP to make sure they are noted down. -
CONTACT THE UNION
Always contact your union as soon as possible after your accident. Do not wait until you have made a full recovery. The sooner you notify your union, the sooner enquiries can be made. As time passes it becomes much harder for witnesses to recall accident details and vital evidence could be lost.
